About NUTA
Technology advice should start with the business, not the technology.
NUTA was built around a simple idea: businesses deserve to understand why they're making a technology decision before they decide what to do about it.
That's especially important for smaller organizations, where technology decisions can have a significant effect on the people, operations, and budgets behind them.
Why NUTA Exists
I wanted to build something different.
I've spent much of my career watching technology decisions move from problem to solution too quickly.
A problem would surface. Someone would suggest a technology solution. The conversation would move toward implementation before there was enough time spent understanding the current environment, the actual problem, or what that solution would mean for the organization.
Sometimes the proposed solution was exactly right. Sometimes it wasn't.
What bothered me was that we often didn't know which one it was because we hadn't taken the time to understand the situation first.
I also became tired of working in environments where reacting was the norm instead of being proactive and purposeful.
I wanted to help smaller businesses approach technology differently - to understand what they're trying to accomplish, consider their options and tradeoffs, and make deliberate decisions about what comes next.
That's why I built NUTA.

Meet Spencer
I'm Spencer Shiley.
I've spent more than 18 years working with infrastructure and technology in organizations where the systems have to work - including manufacturing, aerospace, research, and other complex environments.
I've worked through infrastructure projects, difficult technology decisions, operational challenges, and the realities of supporting technology with finite budgets and finite people.
Over time, I became increasingly interested in the decisions behind the technology - not just how to implement something, but whether it was the right thing to implement in the first place.
That eventually led me back to school.
I earned my bachelor's and master's degrees because I wanted to develop the business and leadership skills to complement my technical experience.
Experience gives you a perspective. Education gives you another. Good leadership requires both.
What I Believe
A few things I believe about technology advice.
02
Good advice should make things clearer.
If a technology conversation leaves you more confused than when it started, something went wrong. Good advice should reduce uncertainty and help people understand their options.03
You shouldn't have to know the answer before asking the question.
You don't need to know whether you need an assessment, an implementation project, or strategic advice before talking with NUTA. That's what the conversation is for.Experience
Built on experience. Not theory.
NUTA is intentionally small.
The experience behind it isn't.
The common thread isn't a particular technology. It's learning how to make technology work in the real world - with real budgets, real people, and real consequences.
Enterprise infrastructure
Virtualization
Microsoft and Azure environments
Business continuity and disaster recovery

Start a Conversation
If you're tired of reacting to technology, let's talk about what's next.
You don't need to have the answer figured out.
You just need to have a question worth asking.
Start a ConversationThe first conversation is complimentary and usually takes about 30 minutes.
